about

Based on a documentary we saw years ago, an elder of the Kikuyu tribe we call Mayamo laments the passing of the old ways in the rush to westernization and modernization. Ironic in its world beat type of format, it still contains a heart of acoustic guitar and harmony that mirrors the heart of the ancient wisdom crying to be retained.

lyrics

My name is Mayamo I live in the Kikuyu tribe.
Our old ways are dying but we try to keep them alive.
My son’s a diviner, some day like me he’ll lead the tribe.
He’s back from a journey, his powers keep people alive.
He travelled with cattle that he had received for his pay.
One special cow he had struggled and died on the way.
She lost her hoof coming over up on a mountain pass.
My son stirred her on, but she had to succumb at last.
The night filled the day, each moment then seemed like years.
My son’s heart was broken, inside were invisible tears.
Like my son’s cow, our people are struggling now.
The ways of our fathers which sheltered us have been put down.
Instrumental
Our young men are restless and starting to do what is wrong.
I am their leader, though old, I must still remain strong.
Our old ways are dying and soon they’ll be no peace I fear.
The pain that I see I must hide through invisible tears.
Like my son’s cow, our people are struggling now.
The ways of our fathers which sheltered them have been put down.
All we can do is to watch as the weeks turn to years.
And not show our children the hurt of invisible tears. (3X)
Oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-Mayamo; Instrumental and end.
