about

Two years ago, Daya watched Oprah interview Meg Ryan. Meg had taken a break from doing movies for a while because she had to find her place, her true self before she could continue onto anything else. What she learned about herself is explained in this song. Chris and I also incorporated what our parents taught us about being true to one’s self. Daya was very happy and inspired to hear how Meg had allowed herself to come forth and be the person she truly is. Daya wrote this song that day. She kept the melody and tune in her head for two years until Chris was able to work on it with her after he heard Daya play the basic song. Meg said in the interview with Oprah (paraphrasing), “I don’t have to be who you think I am, I don’t have to be a star, I don’t have to be who you want me to be, I just have to be who I am.”

lyrics

Let me see, if I can explain some things to you
They’re hard to come by, but only life can bring them to you.
You don’t have to be who they think you are
You don’t have to be a star.
You don’t have to be who they want you to be
You just have to be who you are.
Chorus:

It’s not too late: let me see if I can explain
It’s not too late: let me see if I can explain
It’s not too late, not too late

When I was young, my mother she showed me what to do
I’m passing it on, the ageless baton, my love for you.
To listen and be wise
She opened up my eyes.
She taught me what to do
An now I’m showing you

Chorus:

Bridge:
Things I did not have the heart to share
No one cared, they were blind
Now the time has come to open up and pass the gift to you.

You are young. The whole world is there for you.
So much fun, people are there to care for you.
Find a place to start
Just open up your heart
Don’t be afraid to share
And find someone who cares.

Chorus and end.
